The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a pancytotropic virus which is a member of the oncornavirus sub family of retroviruses. When you think of your pet cancers and their causes, feline leukemia virus (FeLV) come to mind. FeLV is recognized as to be the most common infectious disease of cats. This virus contains a single-stranded RNA genome and with reverse transcriptase infects a host cell and makes a DNA copy of its genome (provirus). FeLV is divided into 4 subgroups: FelV-A, FeLV-B, FeLV-C and FeLV-T. About 40% of all cats can fight off this FeLV virus on their own (maybe acute no lymphoid leukemia). Some 30% die quickly from this disease. Some cats will develop to acute lymphoid leukemia and others will continue to keep this FeLV virus in the bodies as carrier.
Under dry conditions the FeLV (feline leukemia virus) does not survive for more than 2-3 hours outside the host and cannot bear for soaps, detergents, alcohol, bleach, disinfectants, heating and drying but survive in the moist at room temperature conditions. The most likely route of transmission of FeLV is continued intimate moist contact, such as sharing water and food bowls. Only FeLV-A (feline leukemia virus-A) is transmittable and infectious.

Cats infected with feline leukemia virus disease often have nonspecific symptoms. These cats may loss of appetite, act lethargic, poor coat condition, have fevers, infections of the skin, skin lesions, stomatitis, weight loss, fatigue, bladder, seizures, lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes), pancytopenia, reoccurring bacterial and viral illness, jaundice, anemia, gingivitis and diarrhea.
