CMML Leukemia

CMML Leukemia (Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia also called juvenile CML or JCML) is a form of leukemia featuring monocytosis that usually occurs in children under age of 5. CMML leukemia is a slowly progressing form of chronic leukemia that usually affects the elderly and sometimes progresses to acute myelomonocytic leukemia. The categorization of this disease has been controversial. CMML Leukemia Symptoms
The symptoms of chronic myelomoncytic leukemia (CMML leukemia) are similar to those of the acute leukemias such as bruising, headaches, infection, sweating, pale skin, enlarged spleen and liver, enlarged lymph nodes and low platelet count. Symptoms include monocytosis with granulocytosis, splenomegaly, and thrombocytopenia. Patients with CMML leukemia can present with various different clinical features, mimicking either myeloproliferative neoplasms or myelodysplastic syndroms depending upon a patient's specific presentation.

CMML Leukemia Treatment

CMML Leukemia Treatment: Unlike CML, CMML leukemia doesn’t have a chronic phase. When CMML leukemia is diagnosed, progressive deterioration usually occurs. Stem cell Transplantation or bone marrow transplant is the best option for cure with about a 50 percent survival rate.

However chemotherapy is sometimes use to het the leukemic cells under control while preparing for bone marrow transplant. The risk of relapsing after transplant is high about 50 percent. CMML (JMML) clinical researchers recommend that a patient with CMML leukemia have a stem cell transplantation (bone marrow transplant) scheduled as soon as possible after diagnosis. After bone marrow transplant, the relapse rate for children with CMML (JMML) leukemia may be 50 percent and a significant number of patients with CMML leukemia do achieve complete remission and long-term cure after a second bone marrow transplant. Relapse often occurs within 1-3 months after transplant and the possibility of relapse drops considerably at the 1 year after bone marrow transplant.
